A Day Without You - An Entire Century
Asiya showed me this song the other day which may as well double as poetry. Urdu is such an awesome language. It encapsulates and describes vivid emotion beyond what English allows for a lot of the time. Not usually a big fan of Arijit Singh but the lyrics in this one hit deep. A mixture of deep pain and a glimmer of some hope. The song and my favourite lines below, pardon my horrific translation.
“Khairiyat pucho
Kabhi to qaifiyat pucho
Tumhare bin deewane ka-kya haal hai
Dil mera dekho
Na meri haisiyat pucho
Tere bin ek din jaise saun saal hai”
Translated:
“Ask about my well-being, ask about my circumstances sometime.
Show some curiosity as to how your lover is without you.
Consider my heart, not my prestige (or status).
A day without you feels like an entire century.”
“Tumhari tasveer ke sahaare
Mausam kayi guzaare
Mausami na samjho
Par ishq ko hamare
Nazron ke samne main
Aata nahi tumhaare
Magar rehte ho har pal
Manzar mein tum hamare
Gar ishq se hai mila
Phir dard se kya gila
Is dard mein zindagi
Khush’haal hai
Ye dooriyan filhal hain”
Translated:
With just having just a picture of yours, I have spent many seasons.
But don’t think of my love as seasonal (or periodic).
I might not be able to give you a glimpse of mine (or meet you).
But you are always a part of the thoughts in my mind.
If it comes from love
Then what complaints am I to have of this pain in my throat?
Life is still somehow happy in spite of suffering.
The distances among us are temporary.”
