Anandamaya

Intuition may be seen as a mental function. However, it is vastly different than deduction, induction, emotion and memory. More than just a mind acting on itself, intuition is that same mind reaching beyond itself, reaching up toward something else. It is the influx of a fundamentally new structure or reflection into the individual mind. It is the movement of mind to evolve from input of the transpersonal realms, towards the Overmind, anandamaya, the collective mind.

Sometimes in life, it it gets hard to differentiate intuition from emotive thought. Any idea or inclination which goes against rational, logical thought is oft labelled "intuitive." In terms of the hierarchy of being, however, the distinction between emotion and intuition is an important one. Sometimes intuitions align themselves with emotion, circumventing the rational level; in other situations, intuition and emotion may oppose each other. Intuition is irrational, but in a different way than emotion: taking inspiration from beyond the body. It exists on the level of higher-order emergent patterns.

Intuition is not generally experienced as a "spiritual" phenomenon, a near direct contact with pure Being. Rather, intuition is an experience of the Divine in the form of some particular idea, some specific inspiration. It is the result of pure Being’s ray infiltrating the mental realm, and helping the mind transcend its own limitations.

Everyone experiences intuition, but some people experience it only occasionally, and only with slight intensity. Intuition plays a minor role in their lives. For others -- especially artists, writers, scientists and other "creative people" -- intuition is a dominant part of life. Even among creative people, however, the power of intuition involved may vary greatly.
